The number of Russian troops in Belarus has significantly decreased, the State Border Service of Ukraine reported on Friday, CNN reports.
Until recently, Ukraine had about 2,000 Russian troops stationed at training grounds in Belarus, but now “almost all Russian troops have been withdrawn from the territory of Belarus,” said Andrii Demchenko, spokesman for the State Border Service of Ukraine.
“However, we cannot rule out that at some point as part of the rotation, regular units will be returned to the territory of Belarus,” Demchenko said at the briefing, stressing that the situation on the border with Belarus “remains fully under control.”
The border service of Ukraine also stated that they did not observe “organized deployment of Russian mercenaries” on the territory of Belarus.
However, the comments came after Belarus’ defense ministry announced on Friday that fighters from Wagner’s private mercenary group had been training Belarusian fighters near the town of Osypovichi, about 90 kilometers south of the capital Minsk.
There is no threat of invasion from Belarus
Finally, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, released the security situation on the border with Belarus after fears of further attacks were raised following reports that a group of Russian Wagner mercenaries were moving into Belarus after a failed uprising in Russia.
Zelensky again insisted that, according to the information available in Ukraine, “there is no threat of invasion from Belarus.”
