The passport found during a search of the Russian office of the leader of the “Wagner Group” Yevgeny Prigozhin was used by his double to enter Lithuania in 2020 in an attempt to create a scandal, the counterintelligence of the Russian Federation announced in Lithuania on Wednesday, Reuters reports.
Prigozhin was exiled to Belarus under a deal that ended the armed rebellion of his group of mercenaries.
The Russian publication Fontanka.ru published on Sunday footage from a raid by Russian special services on the headquarters of Wagner’s mercenary group in St. Petersburg that day, including several passports bearing the name of Yevgeny Prigozhin. The photos were later deleted.
A photo in one of the passports appears to match a photo released in 2021 by Lithuania’s State Security Counterintelligence Department of a man said to be traveling under the name Prigozhin.
“The passport issued to a Prigozhin impersonator was used in 2020 for an information attack against Lithuania,” the security service said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
The service also stated that the aim was to undermine European solidarity by creating the impression that Prigozhin himself had disregarded the sanctions and visited the EU member state Lithuania. The fact that the passport was found in Prigozhin’s office indicates that he himself was a participant in the conspiracy.
“According to the assessment of the Lithuanian special services, the document proves that the information attack was carried out by subjects under the control of Prigozhin, possibly in coordination with the special services of the Russian regime,” the report says.
We will remind, on Tuesday afternoon, the Belarusian dictator Oleksandr Lukashenko confirmed that Prigozhin had arrived on the territory of his country after several days, during which the whereabouts of the head of mercenaries of the “Wagner” PMC remained unknown.
