Lukashenko: If Russia Collapses, We’ll All Be Under Rubble
The ruler of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, made a series of statements on Tuesday, June 27, in which he spoke about his role in eliminating Yevgeny Prigozhin’s coup. DW presents the highlights of his performance.
On the decision to intervene in the situation with the rebellion
“Because if turmoil spreads across Russia (there are colossal prerequisites for this), then we will be next … We will all be under the rubble if Russia collapses,” warned Lukashenko. He also stated that the Belarusian army was put on full alert on the day of the rebellion.
On negotiations with Yevgeny Prigozhin
According to Lukashenka, he intervened in the situation with the Wagner PMC rebellion after Putin called on the morning of June 24. “I realized that the situation is complicated, a cruel decision was made – to wet it. I suggested that Putin take his time, talk to Prigogine and his commanders. “Sasha, it’s useless,” he told me. “He doesn’t pick up the phone.” I ask: “Where is he?” – “In Rostov.” I say: “A bad peace is better than any war. I will try to contact him.” Lukashenka announced Prigozhin’s long persuasion, as a result of which he abandoned his plans to go to Moscow and stopped demanding the resignation of Shoigu and Gerasimov. “There is no need to demand the impossible,” Lukashenka supported him.
About PMC “Wagner” in Belarus
Lukashenka offered Prigozhin and his military company to “change hands” in Belarus – at their expense. Lukashenka promised to provide the PMC militants with an abandoned military unit. “We are not yet building camps for Wagner PMCs. But if they want, we will put them.” The ruler of Belarus confirmed that Prigozhin is already in the country. At the same time, Lukashenka noted that a unit like the Wagner PMC “will not interfere with the Belarusian army.”
About the Belarusian opposition
“Color revolutions don’t happen if there are no reasons for it in the country,” said Lukashenka, admitting that the Belarusian opposition “worried” to take advantage of the situation to seize power, but “there was a false start”.
