The Russian presidential administration has been trying to negotiate with Wagner mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin after he called for mutiny against the Russian high command, a Kremlin source cited by Important Stories and The Moscow Times said.
“The Kremlin tried to negotiate with Prigozhin yesterday. He received a call from the President’s Administration with a proposal to back down and explain all his messages with a cyber attack and forgery of his voice,” the source said.
The source stressed that the leader of the mercenaries was called by representatives of the Kremlin, and not by President Vladimir Putin.
Prigozhin did not agree to the Kremlin’s terms, and then the Russian president ordered criminal proceedings against him, the source added.
On Saturday, when the “Wagnerians” took control of Rostov, the Russian authorities again tried to negotiate with Prigozhin, writes Meduza with reference to two sources close to the Kremlin.
However, a few hours later, the Russian leadership changed the plan. What happened in the meantime is unknown.
The authorities could be conducting secret negotiations with Prigozhin, Meduza sources suggest. “It seems it didn’t work,” says one of the interlocutors of the independent publication.
Around 10:00 a.m. Moscow time, Putin made a televised appearance accusing Wagner’s group of “treason,” Prigozhin responded to Putin by saying the president was wrong and called the country’s leadership “garbage.”
On Friday night, Prigozhin accused the Russian military of bombing vacationing mercenaries of the Wagner PMC and promised to prosecute Russian Defense Ministry officials, starting with Minister Sergei Shoigu.
Important Stories also writes that the experienced fighters of Wagner’s group have been ordered not to take part in an armed uprising.
“We are waiting for an official order from Batya (Yugen Prigozhin, no). The Russian Guard and the army refuse to carry out orders, we are ordered to wait. Closer to noon, there should be an order to continue the action,” said one of the mercenaries involved in the invasion of Ukraine.
