Dutch military intelligence in 2022 warned the CIA about a possible Ukrainian plan to blow up the Nord Stream gas pipelines three months before they were struck, Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported on Tuesday, without specifying the source, CNN writes.

The discovery was made after a joint investigation by Dutch television NOS and German publications Die Zeit and ARD, news.ro reports.

Last year, the U.S. received information from a European ally that the Ukrainian military was planning an attack on the Nord Stream gas pipeline, CNN reported last week, based on information provided by three U.S. officials.

The attack on the pipelines last September was condemned by both US officials and Western allies as sabotage of critical infrastructure. It is currently being studied by other European countries.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Tuesday that the CIA warned Ukraine last year against attacking the Nord Stream gas pipeline after receiving information about an alleged Ukrainian plan, citing officials familiar with the information exchange.

The CIA received the information from Dutch military intelligence, officials told the WSJ.

NOS reported that the MIVD, the military intelligence service of the Netherlands, managed to collect detailed information at an early stage about Ukraine’s alleged plot to blow up the pipelines. MIVD offered no comment to NOS, the broadcaster said.

The intended sabotage in June 2022 would have been canceled, but in September Nord Stream was blown up. According to NOS, the scenario would be almost identical to the one exposed by MIVD three months ago.

The CIA and the Dutch embassy in the US declined to comment to CNN, as did the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ukrainian government.
