According to Joy Huertas, Philadelphia City Hall spokeswoman, the Pennsylvania State Police closed the highway in both directions.
“Avoid this area,” the Office of Emergency Management said in a statement. “Plan and look for alternative commute routes.”
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said on Twitter that the fire occurred between Exit 32 on Academy Road and Exit 30 on Cottman Avenue. The surrounding roads are also closed.
“The fire is under control and city and state authorities are responding to limit the impact on local residents and travelers,” Huertas said in an email.
