USA: Philadelphia bridge collapse

Part of a bridge collapsed on a freeway in Philadelphia, USA, after a fire broke out in a truck.

City officials have confirmed that all lanes of Interstate 95 are closed in both directions in northeast Philadelphia after part of the freeway collapsed Sunday morning.

I-95 is the main north-south interstate along the East Coast, stretching from Florida to Canada.

According to Joy Huertas, Philadelphia City Hall spokeswoman, the Pennsylvania State Police closed the highway in both directions.

“Avoid this area,” the Office of Emergency Management said in a statement. “Plan and look for alternative commute routes.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said on Twitter that the fire occurred between Exit 32 on Academy Road and Exit 30 on Cottman Avenue. The surrounding roads are also closed.

“The fire is under control and city and state authorities are responding to limit the impact on local residents and travelers,” Huertas said in an email.
