The work of the Icelandic embassy has been suspended due to the “low” level of trade, cultural and political relations between the two countries, the ministry said.

“The current situation simply does not make it viable for Iceland’s small foreign service to run the embassy in Russia,” said Foreign Minister Tordis Gilfadóttir.

The Russian ambassador was informed of the Foreign Ministry’s decision on Friday, which also asked Russia to limit the work of the Russian embassy in Reykjavik.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries have not been severed, the ministry said, adding that the embassy will be reopened after normalization of relations.
