Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said today that Russian troops have repelled an offensive by Ukrainian troops in the Zaporozhye region in southern Ukraine.
“Today at 1:30 am in the Zaporozhye zone, the enemy attempted to break through our defenses with firearms. […] up to 1,500 people and 150 armored vehicles,” Shoigu said in a statement. However, according to the Russian Defense Minister, “the enemy suffered heavy losses.”
“The enemy forces, specially trained to carry out this penetration, did not reach their goal,” he added.
According to Shoigu, “after a two-hour battle, the enemy lost 30 tanks, 11 combat vehicles and up to 350 people.”
So far, the Ukrainian authorities have not made any official mention of this.
Kyiv has been saying for months that it is preparing a major counteroffensive aimed at reclaiming Ukrainian territories seized by Moscow. Observers see the intensification of Kyiv’s “offensive operations” along the front lines in recent weeks as the first sign of this long-awaited counter-offensive.
