Two people were killed and others injured Tuesday in a shooting in a park in the US state of Richmond, Virginia, as high school students and their families left a theater where they had just taken their exams, police said.

Two suspects were detained following the incident, which took place shortly after 5:00 pm. [τοπική ώρα· τα μεσάνυχτα ώρα Ελλάδας] This was reported to journalists by the acting chief of police of Richmond Rick Edwards and other officials.

According to Edwards, the dead were men aged 18 and 36, and one of the suspects was 19 years old.

The United States pays an extremely high price for the widespread distribution of weapons on its territory and the ease with which its inhabitants can access them.

In 2021, about 49,000 people died from gunshot wounds in the US, or more than 130 deaths per day, more than half of which were classified as suicides. It was a tragic record for the second year in a row: 45,000 deaths were recorded in 2020.

There were about 44,000 gun-related deaths last year, half of which were homicides, accidents or self-defense cases and the other half were suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
