Hong Kong: Arrests over 34th anniversary of Tiananmen Square massacre

His police Hong Kong arrested today on the 34th anniversary of the bloody crackdown on Tiananmen Square in Beijing, a representative of the opposition League of Social Democratsanother prominent figure in the democratic movement there and at least 7 people.

Chang Po-ying of the League of Social Democrats held a small LED candle, which activists often use at pickets to commemorate the victims of the June 4, 1989 repression, and two flowers. The police immediately took her into custody and put her in a cage.

This weekend A heavy police force was deployed in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park and surrounding areas to stop anyone they thought might be participating in any form of public demonstration over the events of June 4, 1989.

According to media sources, Alexandra Wong, 67, a pro-democracy activist better known as “Mami Wong”, was also arrested late at night (local time) along with 7 other people.

Law enforcement initially surrounded her, and then Wong followed the officers without resistance, holding the bouquet of flowers she was holding.

Another woman was also arrested after shouting “Raise the candles! Cry 4/6!” referring to June 4, 1989, the day of the persecution on Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

The young man, dressed in black, was holding a book of a play about the Tiananmen Square persecution called May 35, another way of referring to the events in Tiananmen Square, which took place four days after May 31, when he was arrested.

One woman, who was briefly interrogated and searched before being released, told AFP with a shrug:We all know what day it is“.

Trying to erase memory

In mainland China, authorities have wiped out all traces of the Tiananmen Square events.

History books do not mention them, and online discussions on the subject are systematically censored.

This testifies to this british embassy adventure in beijingwhich posted today on social media the front page of the People’s Daily, June 4, 1989, the official organ of the Communist Party of China, which described the influx of wounded to hospitals after the crackdown.

“Within twenty minutes, censors removed our post from Weibo (Chinese social network),” the British Embassy tweeted today.

This year Chinese police have also taken control of the iconic signs of a mobilization against Xi Jinping’s regime that took place last fall.

Thus, a significant police force was deployed around Beijing’s Xitong Bridge, where a demonstration took place in late November and a banner reading “more freedom” was put up.
