Her Minister of Defense Egypt Mohammed Zaki expressed his condolences Israeli colleague after an incident on the border between the two countries in which three Israeli soldiers and an Egyptian security officer were killed.

As the Egyptian army announced, the two ministers discussed measures to be taken to avoid similar incidents in the future.

The two countries had earlier announced a joint investigation into the incident, the details of which remain unclear.

An Egyptian police officer shot and killed two soldiers guarding a border post in the early hours of the morning after Israeli forces prevented smugglers from entering the country during the night, according to the Israeli military.

An Egyptian and a third Israeli soldier were killed hours later in a shootout on Israeli soil.
