Ukraine is ready to launch a long-awaited counteroffensive to retake territory occupied by Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview published on Saturday, Reuters reports.

“We firmly believe that we will succeed,” Zelensky told the Wall Street Journal.

“I don’t know how long it will take. To be honest, it can happen in different ways. But we will do it and we are ready.”

Kyiv hopes this counteroffensive to regain territory will change the dynamics of the war, which began 15 months ago when Russia launched an invasion of the neighboring country.

Last month, Zelensky said Ukraine should wait for more Western armored vehicles to arrive before launching a counteroffensive.

He diplomatically insisted on maintaining Western support, calling for even more military aid and weapons, saying it was important for Ukraine to succeed in its plans.

Russia holds large parts of the territory of Ukraine in the east, south and southeast.

A prolonged period of dry weather in some parts of Ukraine has led to speculation that the expected counteroffensive may be imminent.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has intensified attacks on Russian ammunition depots and transport routes.
