Prisoner politician and lawyer Alexey Navalny published letters testifying to the sometimes playful attitude towards the Russian prison authorities.
Among the things he asked from time to time were a kimono, a balalaika, a beetle, and the right to put a kangaroo in his cell.
The requests were denied by the administration of the “Correction Colony IK-6” in Melehovo, about 250 kilometers east of Moscow.
“When you’re in a prison cell and you don’t have many ways to have fun, you can always have a good time texting the prison administration,” commented Navalny, who is serving an 11.5-year sentence for fraud and contempt of court on charges including he says they were rigged to silence him.
Navalny’s other demands include a bottle of whiskey, a stick, two bags of cheap tobacco, and a black belt.
Navalny, one of President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest critics inside Russia, has been found guilty of violating probation, fraud and contempt of court. He himself speaks of fabricated accusations aimed at drowning out his voice and hindering his political plans.
In 2020, Navalny survived an apparent poisoning attempt during a flight in Siberia with a neurotoxic substance, which was confirmed by tests in Western laboratories. Russia denies any involvement in the deadly strike. He himself was hospitalized in Germany for treatment of poisoning, and when he voluntarily returned to Russia in 2021, he was arrested.
