On Friday, Russian officials made new statements about the escalation of attacks in the country’s border regions, which reportedly killed and wounded civilians. There was also an alleged attack on a Russian-occupied port city in Ukraine.
Ukraine denies its military involvement in the invasions and says they are being led by Russian volunteer fighters.
With multiple reports coming in throughout the day, here’s what we know so far:
Belgorod
The Russian region, which borders the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, has repeatedly come under fire in recent months.
Last week, it was the target of a major cross-border incursion by anti-Putin Russian rebel forces, the biggest such attack since the start of the war, Sky News reported.
The second shelling in Belgorod was carried out yesterday.
Russian Legion of Freedom: “We are wounded, but freedom is won with blood”
A group of pro-Ukraine forces, the Russian Legion of Freedom, said Friday it was fighting Russian troops on the outskirts of a village on Russia’s western border, a day after Moscow said it had repelled three cross-border attacks. Reuters.
“Active fighting is taking place on the outskirts of the village of Nova Tavolzhanka (Belhorod Region). Unfortunately, there are wounded legionnaires, but freedom is won with blood,” the Russian Legion of Freedom said in a statement.

Earlier on Friday morning, the group published a photo accompanied by the message: “Our tank with the flag of “Free Russia” in the village of Nova Tavolzhanka near Shebekino. Good morning from our Motherland! Let’s continue the fight!”

Yesterday, the governor of the region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said that the Ukrainian armed forces shelled the town of Shebekino, which is located near the border between Russia and Ukraine in the region, damaging the administrative building.

At least two civilians were killed and 21 injured as a result of shelling in the Belgorod region of Russia on Friday, AFP reports.
Later, Gladkov reported that more than 2,500 people were evacuated from the area.
The governor also said today that two people were killed and four were injured as a result of the attack on the town of Maslova Prystan, which he attributed to Ukraine.
Bryansk
Located north of Belgorod, Bryansk Oblast is another region that saw sporadic casualties during the war.
Russian official Oleksandr Bogomaz said that this area was shelled again during the night.
It is reported that shells hit two villages near the border with the Ukrainian regions of Chernihivsk and Shumy.
Ukraine denies the involvement of its military in cross-border incursions and claims that they are carried out by Russian volunteers.
Berdyansk
The port city is located in southeastern Ukraine, in the Zaporizhzhia region, which was illegally annexed by Russia last year after a so-called referendum.
The current Russian official Volodymyr Rogov said that the attack on the occupied port was carried out by Ukrainian troops.
Nine people were injured as a result of the attack, he said in a post on Telegram, information about possible victims “is being clarified.”
Two Russian cities in Smolensk were attacked by long-range drones at night
Two long-range drones attacked fuel and energy infrastructure in the Smolensk region in western Russia overnight Thursday into Friday, but there were no injuries or fires, the acting governor of the region said, according to Reuters.
Rogov published a video online showing gray smoke rising near the port.
The attacks were said to have targeted the towns of Divasy and Peresna, near the regional capital of Smolensk, about 270 km from the border with Ukraine, but there was no word on who was responsible.
