Almost a ton of cocaine was found on a sailboat sailing off the coast of Portugal. The drugs were seized and the boat’s only passenger, a 53-year-old man, was arrested.
The operation of the prosecutor’s office took place on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday “about 370 kilometers from the coast of Portugal,” Artur Vaz, head of the Anti-Narcotics Agency, said at a press conference.
The 16-meter Polish-flagged sailboat sailed from a Latin American country, and it is believed that the drugs were destined for various European countries. On Thursday morning, he arrived at the Almada naval base south of Lisbon.
“We are seeing an increase in the flow of drugs, especially cocaine and hashish, to Europe,” Arthur Vaz said, noting that “the largest shipments of cocaine are shipped mostly in containers.”
