A Russian military transport plane was intercepted on Tuesday by the Romanian Air Force, which is on an air policing mission in the Baltic region.

“The last Carpathian Viper interception mission took place on May 30, when F-16s were alerted by the NATO Air Operations Center in Wedem, Germany. A military transport aircraft of the Russian Federation was detected in the NATO area of ​​responsibility near the airspace of the Baltic states. According to the standard procedures of the Alliance, after the interception, the plane was safely escorted until the situation in the air was clarified,” the representatives of the Romanian Air Force reported on Facebook.

The detachment, consisting of approximately 100 soldiers and four F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft belonging to the Romanian Air Force, is participating in an enhanced air policing mission in the Baltic states from April to July.

The main purpose of the mission, which is carried out in the airspace of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, is to prevent violations of the airspace of allies and to provide assistance to military and civilian aircraft in emergency situations that arise during flight.

The personnel stationed in Lithuania at Siauliai Air Base are mainly from the 53rd Fighter Squadron “Warhawks” of the 86th Air Base “Lieutenant Aviator Gheorghe Mochornica”.

The commander of the detachment, which bears the symbolic name “Carpathian vipers”, commander Kosmin Vlad. He is an experienced pilot, a member of the Air Force General Staff team and has represented the Air Force on numerous national and international missions.

The expanded mission of air policing in the Baltic countries under the command of NATO – Baltic Air Policing (BAP), as part of the military surveillance of the airspace of the Baltic countries, is carried out on the basis of the system of rotation of tasks performed by the allied countries since 2004. In 2007, the Romanian Air Force also participated in this mission with four MiG-21 LanceR aircraft from the 71st General Emmanuel Ionescu Air Base in Turzii Plain. (Agerpress)
