Russia announced today that it has destroyed in Odessa, in southern Ukraine, the amphibious assault ship Yuri Olefirenko, which Moscow says was the “last” Ukrainian warship still in service.
“On May 29, as a result of a strike by the Russian Aerospace Forces with high-precision weapons on the loading area for warships in the port of Odessa, the last warship of the Ukrainian Navy, Yuriy Olefirenko, was destroyed,” the message says. This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The AFP agency was unable to confirm this information on its own. The Ukrainian Navy has not yet commented on this message.
“Yuri Olefirenko” – landing ship, formerly known as “Kirovograd”. In 2016, it was renamed in honor of a Ukrainian officer killed in 2015 near Mariupol.
In June 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky awarded the ship’s crew for “heroism” in defending the country.
