Civil Aviation Service New Zealand asks national carrier Air New Zealand… to weigh its passengers international flights from Auckland by July 2.

No, this is not something that many people fear, namely the ticket price based on weight. The initiative is simple is part of the study during which data on the loading and weight distribution of aircraft will be collected.

“We will be weighing everything on the plane, from cargo to food to baggage,” said Alastair James, the airline’s Cargo Control Improvement Specialist. “For customers, crew and hand luggage, we use the average weight we collect through research.”

However, weight is personal data that not everyone wants to disclose. For this reason and in order to protect the privacy of passengers, the airline specifies that the data will be anonymous.

Before boarding, passengers will be asked to stand on a digital scale, and their weight will be recorded, but not visible either on the screen or to outsiders.

“We know the scale can scare some people. We want to assure our customers that their weight will not be displayed anywhere, we will not even know about it, ”says James.

This isn’t the first time Air NZ has tortured its passengers with scales. Domestic passengers participated in a similar survey in 2021, but the current international passenger survey has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
