Spain: Severe storms are expected – authorities are vigilant

Most of it is on alert. Spainbecause of bad weather which affects the Iberian Peninsula, where heavy rains of the past few days have caused flooding after several months of drought.

Torrential rains and storms – too late, according to experts, to solve the country’s acute water shortage – hit the weekend mainly in the southeast of the country. provinces of Almeria and Alicante.

Torrential rain also hit Madrid on Monday evening, causing traffic to come to a halt on some roads and several metro lines being delayed due to significant water inflow.

OUR Spanish Meteorological Service (Aemet) maintains a yellow or orange alert level in many areas today, as there is a risk of hail.

The weather is forecast to continue in the coming days. These rains “will make a significant positive contribution to the rainfall deficit” that Spain has been facing for several months, as the historic drought that hit the country in previous months has serious consequences for the agricultural sector.

However, experts note that during heavy rains, during which water does not have time to penetrate into the ground, they are not enough and too late to cover the deficit and fill the reservoirs.

In accordance with Ministry of Ecological Transitionin the last week of May, the water level in the reservoirs dropped to 47.5% of their power, up from 47.7% a week earlier. In the last decade, the reservoirs at this time of the year were full against an average of 68.1%.

Aemet noted that last April was the hottest and driest on record since weather records began in Spain. 2022 is considered the warmest year in the recent history of the country.
