A golden necklace was found in its wreckage. Titanic, thanks to the first full-size digital scan of the ship.
Richard Parkinson, Magellan’s chief executive who coordinated the mission, called the discovery “amazing” and said: the expert team is not allowed to touch the find due to an agreement between London and Washington that does not allow divers to retrieve items from the sunken ship.
Crew members said they would try to identify the owner of the find, using artificial intelligence to find family members among the 2,200 passengers on board when the Titanic sank.
The scan was carried out in the summer of 2022 by depth mapping company Magellan Ltd and Atlantic Productions, who are making a documentary about the project. The team’s remote-controlled submersibles on a special vessel spent more than 200 hours studying the wreckage from all angles.
The Titanic has been actively studied since its gigantic hull was discovered in 1985. However, due to its size and depth, underwater cameras could only capture parts of it, not the whole.
The cruise ship that sailed triumphantly from Southampton Harbor on April 15, 1912, is rusting in half in the depths of the ocean, with bow and stern about 800 meters apart and a huge perimeter area strewn with the wreckage of the wrecked ship.
