One huge isopod from 14 feet who dominates a plate of ramen caused queues at her restaurant The Ramen Boy. Taipeieither by people who want to photograph it, or by those who want to try it.

A week ago, since the restaurant added a new dish to the menu on May 22, there are already more than 100 people on the waiting list.

“It’s so enticing because of the way it looks – it’s so cute,” says the 37-year-old restaurant owner, holding a huge crustacean while diners take pictures of it.

“As for the cooking method, we use the easiest one, steam it for ten minutes,” and then serve it on top of a bowl of ramen along with chicken and fish broth,” he says. The dish costs $48.

As for its taste, the buyer described it as one combination of crab and lobsterbut more chewy and rich in texture.

Scientists have raised concerns not only about the potential risk to public health, as this largely unknown species may contain toxins and heavy metals, but also about the potential environmental impacts of bottom trawl fishing. But customers don’t seem to want to try it.

Giant isopods, distant relatives of crabs and shrimp, are the largest of thousands of crustacean species.

They are usually found at a depth of 170-2140 meters in the ocean.
