Lithuania: asks for increased NATO forces on its eastern border

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda today called for a stronger presence of NATO forces on the eastern flank of the Alliance against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.

“This is a front line that must be very strong. We need air and missile defense, as well as a greater presence of allied forces in the region,” Nauseda said today after meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Vilnius.

“Germany’s long-term commitment to Lithuania’s security is important for the entire eastern flank of NATO,” he stressed.

Steinmeier, for his part, spoke of Lithuania’s centuries-old struggle for freedom and promised the country German help in the event of a Russian attack.

Lithuanians have “an insatiable desire for freedom and resist foreign rule,” Steinmeier said.

“We stand side by side. Their safety is our safety,” he stressed.

“Together we will protect every square centimeter of NATO allied territory,” Steinmeier added. “Our allies can count on it, Lithuania can count on it.”

Recall that the NATO summit will be held next July in Vilnius, Lithuania.
