Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro met today with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, as part of his first visit to Brazil since 2015, taking advantage of warming relations between the two countries.
Maduro is one of ten South American presidents invited by Lula to a summit aimed at creating a bloc of regional cooperation along the lines of UNASUR. This association, created in 2008, collapsed when conservative governments came to power in some member countries.
The President of Venezuela invited the countries of South America to jointly request the lifting of US sanctions against Caracas. He added that his country is open to investors from Brazil.
During a heartfelt tête-à-tête conversation, the Brazilian president assured Maduro that he would support Venezuela’s bid to join the BRICS group, which includes his country, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
