The head of the Russian private mercenary group “Wagner” has published footage of him walking through a sparkling wine factory in the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, Sky News reports.
The ruined city is the scene of the longest and fiercest battle of the war, with Wagner fighters leading the Russian attacks.
Wagner’s founder and financier Yevgeny Prigozhin said he had gained control of Bakhmut earlier this month and says his fighters will begin surrendering positions to Russian regular forces.
In a video recorded at a sparkling wine factory in the city on Monday, Prigozhin said he was handing over the factory to the Russian military.
“Everything is cleaned, all the stands are numbered, all the bottles are in their places. Two trucks (of champagne) were sent to Ukrainians on March 8. The rest is safe,” he said.
Prigozhin also noted that the owner of the factory has the right to receive his wine, because “private property is private property.”
