Tokayev called the proposal to join the union of Russia and Belarus a joke
Kazakhstan does not need to join the State of the Union of Russia and Belarus, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said on Monday, May 29, calling Alexander Lukashenko’s corresponding proposal a “joke”.
“The other day, Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko suggested that Kazakhstan join the State of the Union. I liked his joke. I think there is no need for this, as there are other integration associations, first of all, the Eurasian Economic Union,” said Tokayev .
“As for nuclear weapons, we do not need them, as we adhere to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Nuclear Weapon Test Ban Treaty. We remain committed to our obligations under these international documents,” he said. President of Kazakhstan added.
Tokayev called the union of Russia and Belarus a “sensitive issue”
At a meeting of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) on May 24, Tokayev invited participants to discuss the “sensitive issue” of interaction within the organization in the presence of a special union state of Russia and Belarus.
“We have a State of the Union in the EAEU, that is, a unique precedent or phenomenon has been created in world political history, the creation of a state according to the formula: two countries – a state with a single legal, political, military power, economic, monetary, cultural and humanitarian space. With a single union government, with a single union parliament. Well, sorry, even nuclear weapons are one for two now. How will we work in these conditions?”, Tokayev said, noting the different level of integration between EAEU members.
Lukashenka invited Kazakhstan to “join the union of Russia and Belarus”
Later, the ruler of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, commenting on these words of Tokayev, suggested that Kazakhstan join the union of the Russian Federation and Belarus. “I don’t think that Kassym Tokayev is worried about this. But if so, then nobody is against Kazakhstan and other countries that have the same close relations as we have with the Russian Federation. And it’s very simple: in an alliance, Belarus and Russia need to join – and there will be nuclear weapons for everyone,” Lukashenka said, stressing that he was expressing his opinion, not the official position.
