Lavrov’s warning: the Black Sea deal could fail

OUR Russia announced today that his consent Black Sea for the transportation of grain will no longer be able to work if the UN agreement with Moscow on overcoming barriers to the export of Russian grain and fertilizers is not implemented.

“If everything remains as it is, and it looks like it will remain so, then it will be necessary to move forward with the fact that (the agreement) is no longer in force,” the Russian Foreign Minister said. Sergei Lavrov during a visit to Nairobi.

The agreement, reached last July, provides that The UN will help Russia overcome any obstacles to the export of its own grain and fertilizers within three years. Lavrov said that the agreement is not being implemented.

The agreement between the UN and Russia was reached at the same time as an agreement allowing the safe export of food and fertilizer from Ukraine across the Black Sea following Russia’s invasion of the country in February 2022.

This month Moscow reluctantly agreed to extend the Black Sea agreement for another two months.until 17 July, but stated that need to make more progress to advance their own interests.

Lavrov said less than 3 percent of the grain exported under the deal reached the world’s poorest countries.
