Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters has said he is against fascism and bigotry after sparking backlash by wearing a Nazi uniform on stage at a concert in Berlin, prompting German police to launch an investigation into the British musician.
The 79-year-old said aspects of his performance at Berlin’s Mercedes-Benz Arena that were contested were a “very clear” statement against fascism, injustice and bigotry.
“Attempts to present this evidence as something else are disingenuous and politically motivated,” he tweeted.
In footage from the May 17 concert, the famous singer and bassist was dressed in a long black raincoat with bright red sleeves, holding a machine gun and aiming at the audience.
The clothes featured a swastika emblem with two crossed hammers, an element that also appeared on the costumes in the film based on Pink Floyd’s legendary album The Wall (1979), which was a critique of fascism.
Waters has said that the portrayal of a “fascist demagogue” has been a hallmark of his speeches since The Wall.
However, Nazi symbols, flags and uniforms are banned in Germany. Police said Waters was under investigation under a different law on suspicion of “public incitement.”
The clothes worn by Waters “are considered capable of degrading the victims, as well as endorsing, glorifying or justifying the Nazi regime’s violent and arbitrary rule in a manner that disrupts public order,” a police spokesman said.
Other German cities, including Munich, Frankfurt and Cologne, tried to cancel Waters’ concerts after Jewish groups, including the Central Jewish Council, accused him of anti-Semitism.
Waters is a member of the Palestinian movement that is persecuting Israel for occupying lands where the Palestinians seek statehood.
He denied the allegations and attempts to cancel the concerts were unsuccessful. The date for the final German tour at the Frankfurt Festhalle on Sunday is still listed on Roger Waters’ website.
