Roger Waters: investigation of the “Nazi” clothes he wore to a concert in Berlin

German police announced today that they have launched an investigation into Roger Waters after the Pink Floyd co-founder wore a uniform resembling that of a Nazi officer on stage at the Mercedes-Benz Arena where he performed his concert in Berlin.

The 79-year-old Briton was unavailable for comment. Social media users defended him, saying that the performance was a satirical re-enactment of scenes from the film of the group’s popular album “The Wall”, which criticizes fascism.

In footage from the May 17 concert, the famous singer and bassist in a long raincoat holds an imitation machine gun in his hands, aimed at the audience.

Nazi symbols, flags and uniforms are banned in Germany. Police said Waters is under investigation under a separate law for suspicion of “public incitement.”

The clothing worn by Waters “could be considered derogatory to the dignity of the victims, as well as justifying, glorifying or justifying the violent and arbitrary yoke of the Nazi regime in a manner that violates public order,” a police spokesman said.

Other German cities, including Munich, Frankfurt and Cologne, tried to cancel Waters’ concerts as Jewish organizations, including the Central Jewish Council, accused him of anti-Semitism.

Waters is a member of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, which opposes Israel over its occupation of lands where Palestinians aspire to statehood.

He denied the allegations against him, and attempts to cancel his concerts were unsuccessful. The final stop of Waters’ German tour, the Frankfurt Festhalle on May 28, is still listed on the artist’s website.
