
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said today that he had a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, reaffirming his country’s readiness to negotiate with the two sides in the war in Ukraine in order to achieve peace.
Lula thanked Putin in a Twitter post for the invitation to attend the international economic forum in St. Petersburg, but did not accept it because, according to him, “at the moment he cannot visit Russia.”

“I reaffirmed Brazil’s readiness, along with India, Indonesia and China, to negotiate with both sides of the conflict in search of peace,” Lula said.
The Kremlin confirmed the phone call and said Putin had stressed to Lula that Russia was open to dialogue on Ukraine.
Lula presents herself as an intermediary in ending the war.
Lula was expected to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Japan, but the meeting did not take place.
