War for power between military and paramilitaries in Sudan has displaced more than 1 million citizens within the African country since April 15, the UN-affiliated International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Wednesday.
Other 319,000 fled to other countries. Egypt, Sudan’s northern neighbor, has taken in the most (over 132,000 people), Chad, a neighbor of the long-suffering Darfur, has recorded about 80,000 arrivals, and South Sudan has 69,000 refugees.
The smoldering conflict between the head of the military regime, General Abdel Fattah al-Buran, and the leader of the feared paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, escalated into armed conflict in mid-April.
