A truck driver was arrested by police Monday night after his car crashed into a fence on the north side of Lafayette Square in Washington, a few dozen yards from the White House, a Secret Service official said.
“No agency personnel or White House personnel were harmed, and the cause and mode of the crash are being investigated,” Secret Service communications director Anthony Guglielmi said on Twitter.
The agency later said there were indications that the strike against the bars was intentional.
They decided to close the roads and sidewalks in the square, the security service of the American president and leading American politicians said.
According to Fox 5, the Hay Adams hotel, located directly across the street, was evacuated.
WUSA broadcast live footage of a rented U-Haul truck parked along a line of steel poles as uniformed police approached it. A remote-controlled robot opened the door, revealing a wheeled cargo cart, but no visible load.
The driver crashed into the bars twice, according to WUSA, citing an eyewitness.
