The guitar, smashed by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, sold for nearly 10 times its $60,000 estimate, and sold for $595,900 at Julien’s Auctions.
This particular black Fender Stratocaster didn’t break down at a concert, but during the recording of their landmark Nevermind album.
The guitar was signed by all three members of Nirvana (Cobain, Novoselic, Grohl) with a silver marker. It also features Cobain’s dedication to his friend Mark Lanegan (of Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age), who died last year. Cobain gave the guitar to Lanegan during the Nirvana Nevermind tour in 1992.

Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide in 1994, was known for his intense performances on stage, which often caused him to break his guitar.
The guitar Cobain played during the legendary MTV Unplugged concert in 1993, just five months before his death, was sold two years ago for $6 million.
A treasure trove of musical memorabilia, including guitars played by Bono and Eddie Van Halen and a jacket worn by Michael Jackson on his Dangerous world tour, were sold during Julien’s two-day auction.
