According to today’s poll by the INSA Bild am Sonntag Institute, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has reached its highest percentage of voters in the past five years, while only one in two Germans is now ruling out the possibility of voting for the AfD in elections.
According to the Bild am Sonntag poll, the Christian Union (CDU/CSU) still leads with 28% unchanged from the previous count, followed by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) with 21% and 1 point more. In third place is the AfD with 17% (+1), followed by the Greens with 14% (-1), the Liberals with 8% (-1) and the Left with 5% (+1).
The Greens continue to suffer, falling below the percentage they won in the 2021 elections (14.8%) for the first time, while the parties in the current governing coalition (CDU, Greens, FDP) have not received a parliamentary majority.
As for the impressive rise of the AfD, it is typical that 8.4% of respondents said they would vote for the far right.
In December 2022, the corresponding rate was 6.8%. At that time, 60% also completely ruled out the possibility of voting for the AfD. Today, that percentage has dropped to 53.9%. “The social climate has changed in favor of the AfD, which indicates that the party maintains its penetration into German society,” explains the head of the INSA Institute, Hermann Binkert, and notes that if the party manages to capitalize on this momentum, it could possibly reach 20%.
