Chinese Nobel laureate Mo Yan says he used technology ChatGPT write a speech honoring fellow writer Yu Hua.

The 68-year-old writer presented a literary award to Yu Hua at the Shanghai Dance Center during the celebration of the 65th anniversary of Shouhuo magazine.

“The person who received this award is really wonderful, and of course he is also a good friend of mine. He’s great, so I have to be like that,” Mo said during his speech.

“A few days ago I was supposed to write him a panegyric according to tradition, but for several days I struggled and could not think of anything. So I asked a graduate student to help me use ChatGPT,” he said.

The reason Mo chose three key phrases is because “Live!” is one of Yu Hua’s most famous novels, “Tooth Extraction” refers to the fact that Yu Hua was a dentist before becoming a writer, and “Wen Cheng” is his new novel for which he was awarded at the ceremony.

According to the South China Morning Post, the audience gasped when it was revealed that the Nobel laureate wrote his speech using artificial intelligence.
