USA: due to accounting error, equipment worth $3 billion was sent to Ukraine

The American Pentagon has overestimated the cost of the sent equipment by about 3 billion dollars. Ukrainea senator’s aide and defense ministry spokesman told Reuters today.

The accounting error was the result of a higher-than-guaranteed value for weapons taken from US stockpiles and then sent to Ukraine, two senior Defense Department officials said today.

“We have found inconsistencies in how we evaluate the equipment that we have transferred to Ukraine,” a senior Defense Department official told Reuters. Officials and a senator’s aide spoke on condition of anonymity. Sources said Congress will be briefed on the accounting adjustment later today.

The official said the number of overpriced weapons is likely to be higher as the Pentagon takes a closer look at the situation.

As of August 2021, the US has supplied about $21.1 billion worth of weapons to Ukraine from its stockpile.

It is not known how Congress will react to this accounting error finding, and the change in the equipment estimate could delay President Joe Biden’s administration from asking Congress to approve additional funds for Ukraine amid the US debt crisis.
