His prime minister Armenia, Nicole Pashinyanannounced today that he has agreed to join peace talks with his president AzerbaijanIlham Aliyev, which will be held in Moscow on May 25 with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin as an intermediary, the Interfax news agency reports.
“There was a proposal from the Russian side to participate in a trilateral meeting on May 25 through the mediation of the President of Russia. We accepted this proposal,” Pashinyan said at a government meeting.
Russia managed to strike a truce to end the six-week conflict between the two countries in 2020, but that agreement has not led to peace, tensions remain high and outbreaks of violence are common.
The United States and the European Union have also taken initiatives to encourage both sides to negotiate a long-term deal.
