According to the Finnish Migration Agency (Migri), more than 1,100 Russian citizens have applied for asylum in Finland due to the threat of conscription in Russia.
The Finnish Migration Agency (Migri) reports that 1,109 Russian citizens have so far applied for asylum in Finland to avoid being drafted to Russia.
“We are not in a position to make asylum decisions,” Sana Suter, head of the Interior Ministry’s migration department, told the Finnish News Agency (STT).
After discussing the issue of asylum applications submitted by conscripts who left Russia, the Nordic countries decided to wait for EU directives. before they make any decision.
However, it is not yet known when the EU will finalize its instructions on this issue.
In late February, Finland suspended asylum cases for Russians who had fled Russia to avoid conscription. The country’s authorities motivated their decision by the fact that they continue to collect information about social conditions in Russia and about the asylum seekers themselves. On October 1 last year, Finland also closed its borders to Russians with tourist visas.
