Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan to hold peace talks in Moscow

The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan will meet on Friday in Moscow to participate in peace talks.

“On May 19, Moscow will host a trilateral meeting and separate bilateral contacts,” which will be attended by Russian Foreign Ministers Sergei Lavrov, Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijan Zeyhun Bayramov, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

These negotiations are taking place against the background of a new escalation of tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan, against the backdrop of Nagorno-Karabakh. Over the past 30 years, Baku and Yerevan have been involved in two wars. The last one, in 2020, ended with the victory of Azerbaijan, which recaptured most of the territory around Nagorno-Karabakh. Despite a truce brokered by Moscow, there are skirmishes on the border from time to time. Last week, an Azeri soldier was killed in new clashes and many soldiers from both sides were injured.

At the same time, international efforts are being made to bring peace to the region. Delegations from Armenia and Azerbaijan held talks in Washington in early May, and last Sunday Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met in Brussels.
