The death toll from the “Sacahol Massacre” now stands at 226, after 15 more bodies were found in the area today. Kenya where the leader of a Christian sect urged believers to fast to death in order to “meet Jesus”.
Police believe most of the bodies found near the coastal town of Malindi belong to the sect of Paul Denge MacKenzie, a former taxi driver who declared himself a “pastor” and founded Good News Church International.
Authorities have begun exhuming 14 more victims today, Prefect Rhoda Onyantsa said. The man was found alive in the Sakahol forest.
The autopsy of the first 112 bodies showed that most of the believers died of starvation on the orders of Mackenzie, who was being prosecuted on charges of “terrorism”. Some of the victims, including small children, were strangled or bludgeoned to death. In some cases, the organs were missing and authorities are investigating the possibility of trafficking in human organs.
Paul McKenzie surrendered to authorities on April 14 and remains in custody. The second pastor, Ezequiel Odero, was arrested on April 28 but released on bail.
