Denmark announced on Tuesday that it is also proposing closer ties with countries such as the Republic of Moldova and Georgia as part of its new national security strategy aimed at countering the Russian threat, Reuters and News.ro reported.

In a new foreign policy and security strategy, the government in Copenhagen is calling for more joint military exercises and coordination of defense plans with its northern neighbours.

“With Finland joining NATO and Sweden on the way to joining, we have a historic opportunity to get closer to a situation where all the Baltic countries, except Russia, are members of the same defense alliance,” said Foreign Minister Lars Lokke. Rasmussen.

The strategy calls for closer relations with the Baltic states, as well as closer diplomatic ties with countries such as Moldova, the Western Balkans and Georgia, to counter Russian influence.

On Monday, Denmark opened its embassy in Georgia.

Last year, the Danes decided to join the European Union’s defense policy, signaling a move to deepen defense ties in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Denmark’s security measures after the new Russian aggression

Denmark is already working with Sweden, Norway and Finland to create a single northern air defense system. However, NATO will continue to be the cornerstone of Denmark’s defense and security, and the United States will remain its most important security ally, the foreign minister said in Copenhagen on Tuesday.

The latest foreign and security policy strategy was presented by the Danish government just weeks before Russia invaded Ukraine last February, so it has now been updated to take account of new developments.

The new strategy acknowledges that Denmark has not taken the security threat posed by Russia in the Baltic Sea region seriously enough, and highlights shortcomings in its ability to defend its own territory.

By 2030, Denmark also aims to meet the NATO spending target of 2% of GDP.

The document also emphasizes that, following the sabotage of Nord Stream gas pipelines last September, critical infrastructure must be protected and Danish society must be better prepared to deal with cyber and terrorist threats, espionage and propaganda.
