A conservative alliance made up of Matteo Salvini’s League, Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia faction ahead of the local elections that took place yesterday and today in 595 Italian municipalities.
Voter turnout was 59%.
In total, in thirteen cities that are regional capitals, the conservatives receive higher percentages in ten, and the center-left in three.
From the first round, the mayors of Latina (seventy kilometers south of Rome) and the northern Italian cities of Treviso and Sondrio were elected, with the victory of center-right candidates. Brescia (near Milan) and Teramo in central Italy were dominated by the centre-left. In the Empire (near Genoa) the candidate supported by the ruling coalition won.
In major cities such as Pisa, Ancona and Vicenza, no candidate received more than 50% of the vote, and therefore voters will be called back to the polls in two weeks.
The first reactions of officials in the Meloni government are characterized by satisfaction, although everyone emphasizes that it cannot be compared with the parliamentary elections last September. With regard to the center-left alliance, it is emphasized that in most cities the progressive candidates are still “in the game” and that the final assessments should be made after the second round.
