
Dozens of the Rohingya Muslim minority died in Cyclone Mocha over the weekend, people in the western Myanmar state of Rakhine, an aid group and the media said.
Two residents and the NGO Partners told Reuters that the cyclone caused widespread destruction and dozens of deaths.
At least 22 members of the Rohingya minority have died, according to reports from residents quoted by the Myanmar Now news site.
“We are expanding our response efforts to deliver critical relief items such as rice and tarps to Rohingya communities affected by Cyclone Mocha as far as possible,” Partners said in another tweet.
The western region of Myanmar is home to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya, a persecuted minority that successive governments have refused to recognize. More than 1 million people live in large camps in neighboring Bangladesh, fleeing military repression in recent years.
