The Kremlin on Monday condemned Emmanuel Macron’s “misunderstanding” of Moscow-Beijing relations after the French president said Russia was moving into a “form of vassalage to China”, AFP and News.ro reported.
“Such an approach is completely wrong and is the result of a completely misunderstanding of the essence of what is happening” between the two forces, Kremlin spokesman Dmytro Peskov said.
“Our relations with China have the character of a special strategic partnership,” he added, at the same time confirming his “categorical disagreement” with the position expressed by Emmanuel Macron.
In an interview with the French newspaper L’Opinion, published on Sunday, the French president estimated that “Russia has already lost geopolitically” due to the start of the invasion from Ukraine.
“She has de facto initiated a form of vassalage to China,” the French head of state said.
On Monday, Peskov replied that Moscow’s relations with Beijing are “consideration of mutual interests, mutual advantages, a convergence of worldviews and a joint refusal to try to dictate and impose someone’s opinion on the development of our country.”
For almost 15 months, China has never publicly condemned Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine, unlike most major world powers.
China, a common front with Russia against the West
In mid-March, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a highly publicized visit to Moscow, where he demonstrated a united front against the West with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
However, this week China sent emissary Li Hui to Europe with the aim of “a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis.” Li Hui will visit Kyiv on Tuesday and Wednesday as part of this tour with stops in Russia, Poland, France and Germany.
The Kremlin also warned on Monday that new arms shipments to Ukraine, announced by the United Kingdom ahead of a meeting between British Prime Minister Risha Sunak and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi at the British prime minister’s country residence in Checkers, would cause “further destruction.”
“Great Britain aspires to be at the head of the countries that continue to flood Ukraine with weapons,” – condemned Dmytro Peskov. These supplies “will not significantly affect the conduct” of the war in Ukraine, but “will cause even more destruction,” he added.
