Russian rockets fired at the Ukrainian city of Ternopil, home to Ukraine’s representatives at the Eurovision Song Contest, as the contest kicked off on Saturday night.
Two civilians were hospitalized with burns and shrapnel wounds.
“At the very moment when Europe is celebrating music, unity and light at the Eurovision Song Contest, Russia is firing cruise missiles at Ukraine, which is enduring darkness,” the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Ukraine won Eurovision last year and traditionally the winning country will host the next event, but due to the war the song contest was held in the UK.
The Ukrainian duo “Creativity” took the sixth place.
Russia was excluded from the competition organized by the Union of European Broadcasting Organizations (EBU).
Residents of Kyiv were also warned of airstrikes on Saturday, and citizens were ordered to stay in shelters for several hours.
