Elections in Turkey: three people died as a result of protests at polling stations

Three people died in different provinces of Turkey at polling stations, state television channel TRT reported on Sunday.

In Rize, in the constituency of outgoing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Sheref Kurt, a 64-year-old election commissioner from the ruling Justice and Development Party, fell on the ballot box. The townspeople were the first to try to help him before the arrival of the doctors. At the hospital, doctors pronounced him dead.

In the province of Trabzon, near Rize, 75-year-old Aysel Ulousoy felt unwell at a polling station in the Ashgabat region, after which she lost consciousness. Doctors declared her death from cardiac arrest.

In the province of Kerasunda, also in Ponte, an 85-year-old voter suddenly collapsed near the ballot box. Despite the help of doctors, it was not possible to save him. He also died of a heart attack.

Of course, the largest percentage of voters are young people, based on the demographics of the neighboring country. An estimated 5 million voters are voting on Sunday for the first time in their lives.

Elections around the country are taking place without major incidents, but there are some problems. In the southeast, in the province of Sanliurfa, there was a massive brawl between representatives of two local clans. The reason was different political views. The verbal altercation quickly escalated into a physical confrontation with the voters using stones and sticks. There are no serious injuries, only damage to vehicles.

In Mersin, at one of the polling stations, a fight broke out between two supporters of different presidential candidates. After a small scuffle, the guards separated the voters.

In the northwestern province of Kocaeli, a fight broke out for several minutes at the entrance to a polling station, but the cause was the accumulation of those wishing to vote.

In areas affected by the earthquake, elections are held in containers. Many residents of the districts left in February and are returning home for the first time since the deadly earthquakes.

Turkish media are reporting long lines at hundreds of polling stations and voting is expected to be extended for some time, although it usually ends at 5:00 pm.
