An unknown object that entered Polish airspace from Belarus was probably a surveillance balloon, the Ministry of Defense in Warsaw said on Saturday, Reuters reports.
Poland, a NATO member, is on alert for violations of its airspace in the context of the war in neighboring Ukraine, following incidents in November and December in which missiles landed on its territory.
“The Air Operations Center confirmed the appearance in the airspace of Poland of an object that flew from the direction of Belarus,” the Ministry of Defense said in a message on Twitter.
“It’s probably a surveillance balloon,” he added. “Radar contact was lost near Rypin,” a town in north-central Poland.
The spokesman of the Territorial Defense Forces of Poland said that the search for the object is ongoing.
Russian and Belarusian authorities were not immediately available for comment.
After the deaths in November of two Poles hit by what Warsaw says was a missed Ukrainian air defense missile, and the discovery of a military facility in northern Poland in April, national security is a key issue for Warsaw ahead of elections later this year.
