After many months of drought, and although this spring felt like summer due to the heat, snow fell today in parts of northern Spain.
An unusual snowfall for the season occurred in the mountainous region of La Raia in the province of Asturias.
Hail and heavy rain hit Spanish Mediterranean regions such as Catalonia and Valencia, where not a drop fell for several months.
Since the beginning of the year, Spain has had the driest winter on record. Rainfall in the first four months of 2023 was less than half of what is normally recorded, according to the weather service AEMET.
So far, Spain has had 11 days with temperatures higher than usual this season, and this number is already more than double the number of days with unusually high temperatures recorded annually.
