Pakistan: Court orders release of Imran Khan: ‘I was kidnapped,’ he says

A Pakistani court ruled to release him on bail for two weeks. former Prime Minister Imran Khanas his lawyer said today, after his arrest and the bloody demonstrations he caused.

The arrest, which the Supreme Court had called “null and illegal” a day earlier, added to the instability in the country of 220 million people at a time of economic crisis, with record inflation, sluggish growth and IMF funding delays.

They didn’t have the authority to arrest me. I was kidnapped. Looks like the law of the jungle has prevailedKhan told the British newspaper The Independent in Islamabad’s High Court.

Khan, 70, a former cricket star who later entered politics, was ousted as prime minister in April 2022 in a vote of no confidence in parliament. According to public opinion polls, he is the most popular leader in Pakistan.

In many cities in Pakistan violent protests erupted after his arrest earlier this week by an anti-corruption agency. At least eight people have died in violent incidents.

“The Islamabad High Court has set a two-week bail and instructed (the anti-corruption agency) not to arrest Imran Khan during this period,” his lawyer, Faisal Chaudhary, told Reuters.

Khan was expected to leave the court soon, the ARY network reported, while representatives from his Tehreek-e-Insaf (Pakistani Movement for Justice) party expected him to give a speech after his release.
