OUR Armenia And Azerbaijan accused each other today, Thursday, November 5, of shelling their borders, resulting in the death of one Azerbaijani soldier, according to Baku, and wounding of 4 Armenian soldiersAccording to Yerevan, negotiations between Baku and Yerevan are scheduled to be held in Brussels a few days before.
“As a result of a provocation by the Armenian forces, a member of the Azerbaijani armed forces was killed,” the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said, accusing Armenia of opening fire from “large-caliber weapons” on Azerbaijan’s border positions.
For its part, Armenia stated that four of its soldiers were wounded in these clashes, for which it blamed Azerbaijan.
“Azerbaijani forces opened artillery and mortar fire on Armenian positions located in the Sot region” in eastern Armenia, the Armenian Defense Ministry said this morning.
The incident comes as Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev are expected to meet Sunday in Brussels for an EU-sponsored meeting.
This meeting follows intensive four-day talks in Washington in early May between delegations from the two countries under US auspices.
Pashinyan today accused Azerbaijan of seeking to “undermine the negotiations” in Brussels, while stressing that he still intends to go.
“I am not changing my decision to go to Brussels,” he said to his government.
However, he noted that there is “very little” chance of signing a peace agreement with Azerbaijan at this session.
The draft peace agreement “is still at a very preliminary stage and it is too early to talk about a possible signing,” the Armenian Prime Minister explained.
