
Political prisoner Nikolai Klimovich dies in Belarus
Political prisoner Nikolai Klimovich died in the Belarusian colony on Sunday, May 7, human rights center “Vesna” reported. Klimovich, 61, had a second-group disability due to heart disease.
According to human rights activists, blogger and public figure Pinsk Klimovich On February 28, he was sentenced to 1 year in prison in a penal colony for posting a caricature of Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko on social media. Judge Andrei Bychila issued such a sentence at the suggestion of the prosecutor Ilya Guzarevich, despite the defendant’s disability. He was detained in court and recently transferred to serve his sentence in Vitebsk colony No. 3.
Earlier, on February 10, Judge Andrei Bychilo found Nikolai Klimovich guilty of distributing Nazi symbols and fined him 111 Belarusian rubles.
In March, the Viasna Center and other Belarusian human rights organizations classified Klimovich as a condemned for political reasons.
